This has been an unprecedented year in the global climate movement, with millions mobilized for strong climate action. But world leaders are not following the leadership of their citizens--and haven't produced a treaty strong enough to get the world on a path to 350.
As the climate talks in Copenhagen reach their climax, the time has come to add a new element to the political pressure and intellectual arguments: Moral force. Leaders arriving in Copenhagen now face a decision about whether to do what is right.
Thousands of young people in Copenhagen will be fasting on Thursday--inspired by three who have fasted, under appropriate medical supervision, for 42 days. By joining the fast, and communicating its message to politicians and our communities, we can send a signal that we as humanity are united across borders, and ready for change--rising above short-sighted interests for a fair and just world for all. It's now time to step things up and try an unusual tactic--a hunger strike.
It's also crucial that we make our voices heard with direct calls to the offices of world leaders. To jump directly to our call tool/script, click here.
The 350.org team will be delivering reports on the fast to news media and political leaders in Copenhagen, and will be informing the young people who are on Day 43 of the Climate Justice Fast that people all over the world are fasting in solidarity with them.
