Interfaith Call for 350

350 represents more than just a scientific benchmark for a safe climate – there are also deeply moral and spiritual reasons for getting the world back below 350 ppm CO2.

Social justice, creation care, stewardship, earth community, beloved community -- there are many ways we can name and express our moral and spiritual perspectives related to this issue.

We invite people of all faiths and all traditions to join with us in prayer, meditation, action, and celebration for 350.

  • Stand in Solidarity for a Coal-Free Future

In Washington DC today, thousands are gathering for the largest civil-disobedience on the climate crisis in history.  A diverse coaltion will march and protest at the Capitol Power Plant, a dirty symbol of the dirtiest business on Earth, the combustion of coal.

Now is a critical time to show that people everywhere are uniting behind a future free of coal--a future safe from the ravages of climate change.  Stand in solidarity with them by signing the following statement:

  • The Road to 350 is NOT Paved with Tar Sands!

Next Thursday, President Obama will make his first official foreign visit of his presidency, and will meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa. The good news: climate change and energy is the major agenda item. The bad news: Prime Minister Harper aims to make a special deal to aid tar sands development. This presents an opportunity for Canadian and U.S. citizens to make a big statement opposing the tar sands, one of the gravest threats to the global climate and human health.

We here at 350.org are working with Canadian allies to send letters to Prime Minister Harper to make it clear that clean energy, and not tar sands, will get us on the path to reducting global warming pollution. Tar sands are grossly inconsistent with a goal of stabilizing Carbon Dioxide concentrations below 350 parts per million, the goal that leading scientists say is necessary.

  • Let Friedman Know the "One Simple Number"

In yesterday's New York Times, Thomas Friedman published an essay called "Mother Nature's Dow" which included the following sentance:

"It's true, Mother Nature doesn't tell us with one simple number how she's feeling. But if you follow climate science, what has been striking is how insistently some of the world's best scientists have been warning - in just the past few months - that climate change is happening faster and will bring bigger changes quicker than we anticipated just a few years ago. Indeed, if Mother Nature had a Dow, you could say that it, too, has been breaking into new (scientific) lows."

As you well know, it turns out we DO have one simple number. Let's let Friedman--and the world know what it is.

Check out the talking points at the bottom of this page for inspiration, and keep your letter short and sweet--under 150 words is best.

African delegates, joined by Bolivia and Venezuela, are taking a stand for strong targets. Please sign the pledge below to stand with African delegates at the UN climate talks in Barcelona. African youth climate activists and 350.org volunteers will deliver the pledges in person to delegates throughout this week, and we'll display your short personal messages to delegates in real time.

    Dear Delegate,

Thank you for your continuing support of strong greenhouse gas emissions targets and a fair, ambitious and binding global treaty in Copenhagen. On October 24, as part of the International Day of Climate Action, we staged more than 200 events throughout Africa highlighting the need to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions to 350 parts per million - the safe level in the atmosphere.

Know that we stand behind you as you hold a strong line and let developed nations know that they must reduce their emissions in line with the most recent science. The future of Africa and the future of the planet depend on this, and we thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

What would you tell your delegate so they feel your support in Barcelona? (make sure it is less than 140 characters!)

Can you sign this bold call for climate action by signing the survival pact below?

Together, we sign this pact to stand for the survival of all nations and peoples.  As an individual, I stand with the world most vulnerable countries in calling for a global climate treaty that is grounded in the latest science and strong enough to get the world back to 350.
